Calf Disbudding

Calf Disbudding

Disbudding calves early, with proper sedation and pain relief, is better for the calf and easier for you. Our farm team disbuds efficiently, safely and with welfare front of mind.

Disbudding is one of those jobs that's far better done properly and early. With sedation and pain relief, calves settle quickly and the buds heal cleanly - and it meets welfare expectations, which matters more than ever.

We can fold disbudding into a wider youngstock plan alongside drenching, mineral supplementation, vaccination and disease investigations, so your calves get everything they need in as few handlings as possible.

Our disbudding service

  • Done at the right age - earlier is quicker to heal and kinder to the calf

Calf Disbudding - your questions

What age should calves be disbudded?
Earlier is better - generally within the first few weeks, while the horn bud is small. Younger calves heal faster and find it less stressful. Talk to us about timing your mob.
Do you use pain relief?
Yes - sedation and local anaesthetic are part of how we disbud. It's better for the calf's welfare and makes the whole job calmer and quicker.
Can you disbud at our place?
Yes, on-farm disbudding is part of our everyday farm run across the Waikato. Give us a call to book your calves in.
